Franklin County Commissioners Set Tentative 2016 Budget

11/24/15 - CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Franklin County Commissioners approved a tentative budget for 2016 of $107,604,300. The budget includes an increase in real estate taxes of 1.95 mills for a total including county, library, and debt service of 28.65 mills. The 7.3% increase means an additional $26.60 in county taxes for the owner of a $100,000 property.

"In the past 6 years, we have increased taxes only 2.2%. We have consistently been in the bottom 25% of county property taxes in Pennsylvania. With fixed assessments and increased costs, an increase could only be held off for so long,” said Dave Keller, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

“This budget provides a safety net for our most vulnerable citizens from cradle to grave, and maintains a reserve balance to insure that those services could continue in the event of future state budget impasses,” said Vice Chairman Bob Thomas.

Bob Ziobrowski, Board Secretary, added, “We’ve delayed replacements of equipment, deferred some maintenance projects, and postponed improvements to keep taxes lower during tough times. Eventually you must pay a nickel to save a dime.”

The final budget will be available for public examination until December 17, 2015, when commissioners will vote to accept or amend the final budget.

The 2016 preliminary budget is available to view here in the 2016 folder.
