Arbor Day Planting Highlights Trees for Tomorrow Initiative in Franklin County

APRIL 29, 2016:
The Franklin County Commissioners participated in a tree planting this week in celebration of Arbor Day, to emphasize the Trees for Tomorrow initiative they began in 2012 and to mark progress towards meeting the countywide goal. Three dogwoods were planted outside the Agricultural Heritage Building on Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. The trees were provided by Snavely’s Garden Center.
The Trees for Tomorrow initiative continues to grow throughout Franklin County. The objectives of the program are to provide education on the important aspects of planting and caring for trees and to encourage land owners across the county to participate. The Franklin County Commissioners set a goal to see that one tree is planted for every resident of Franklin County. The goal is for approximately 150,000 trees to be planted throughout the county by residents, public and private entities and organizations.

Trees add beauty to any community and help people connect with our natural environment. Trees planted in the right locations provide wind breaks and shade which can help lower utility bills and increase the value of properties. Tree roots help absorb stormwater runoff and prevent erosion. Trees provide important habitat for birds and other animals, and cool, well-shaded streams are able to carry more dissolved oxygen, which fish such as trout require.
