CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have declared April 23-29, 2023, to be Franklin County Public Library Week and are urging residents to connect with their local libraries to take advantage of the services and resources these institutions offer in their communities.

“Learning is a freedom that should be shared by everyone, and our libraries offer an incredible array of information and educational opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller. “Our libraries are so much more than just the books on their shelves. They bring people together and create a sense of community.”

The American Library Association estimates the U.S. is home to more than 116,000 libraries, including public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries and specialty libraries that pertain to specific professions, religions and other niche groups. Locally, there are seven public libraries in Franklin County, six of which are served by the Franklin County Library System.

The Franklin County Library System’s strategic emphasis for 2023 is partnership and growth. This year, staff are enhancing outreach efforts in underserved communities; offering cultural programs in conjunction with other organizations; hosting relationship-building  seminars focused on building civility; and encouraging the public to use libraries as community, civic and cultural centers to provide neutral spaces for conversation.

By observing Franklin County Public Library Week, the commissioners encourage residents to visit area libraries to explore life-long learning opportunities.
