CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed March to be American Red Cross Month in Franklin County. By doing so, the commissioners are celebrating the humanitarian spirit of American Red Cross volunteers in local communities and their commitment to ensuring no one faces a crisis alone.

In celebration of American Red Cross Month, the commissioners are recognizing the contributions of area Red Cross volunteers. In Franklin County, there are 29 volunteers who support the mission of the Red Cross by helping to provide emergency shelter, food and comfort to families affected by home fires or natural disasters; by donating blood for accident victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients; and by providing support to U.S. service members and veterans, along with their families and caregivers.

Since July, the Red Cross has responded to 10 disaster events in Franklin County, supporting 52 individuals in their times of need. In that same timeframe, the organization collected 2,375 units of blood, served 173 people through its Community Preparedness and Resiliency programs, and provided assistance in 47 armed forces cases. In the 11-county Central Pennsylvania Chapter, Red Cross volunteers have logged 24,276 hours of service since July.

“Franklin County residents never shy away from lending a helping hand to those in need,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “With that same spirit in mind, we encourage everyone to continue that selflessness and compassion to support the humanitarian mission and work of the American Red Cross, whether that’s by volunteering, giving blood, learning life-saving skills or contributing to the organization financially.”
