The Courts of Common Pleas are the trial courts of Pennsylvania where major civil and criminal cases are heard. Judges also decide cases involving adoption, divorce, child custody, abuse, juvenile delinquency, estates, guardianships, charitable organizations and other matters.

The Courts of Common Pleas are the trial courts of Pennsylvania. Major civil and criminal cases are heard in these courts. Judges also decide cases involving adoption, divorce, child custody, abuse, juvenile delinquency, estates, guardianships, charitable organizations, and many other matters. Judges of the Common Pleas are elected to 10-year terms. A president judge and a court administrator serve in each judicial district. The 39th Judicial District includes Franklin and Fulton counties.

Court Closures and Delays
Unless otherwise stated or instructed, in the event of inclement weather or other emergency situations, the 39th Judicial District Court of Common Pleas (Franklin and Fulton counties), the magisterial district courts, and all court departments will follow Franklin County’s decision regarding closure, delayed start time, or early dismissal.
In the event of a delayed start, the court, at the discretion of the assigned presiding judge, will call the order of the cases. Litigants, defendants and parties are encouraged to contact their attorneys for reporting instructions and/or contact the court location where court is scheduled.
