About The Office
The Sheriff’s Office is located in the Franklin County Judicial Center and is staffed with a roster of 50 employees. The Sheriff’s Office is organized into three divisions: field, judicial and security. The office has various specialty units, to include a K9 and a complement of sUAS (drone) pilots.
Responsibilities
In Franklin County, the Office of Sheriff is responsible for:
- Service and enforcement of court orders, writs of summons, complaints, money judgments and injunctions, and conducting real estate sales
- Issuing licenses to carry concealed firearms, licenses to sell firearms and licenses to sell precious metals
- Service of warrants issued by the courts
- Providing security to county properties and to the courts
- Providing safe and secure transportation of prisoners for court appearances both locally and from areas where offenders are found throughout the United States
- Enforcing violations of the PA Crimes, Civil and Vehicle Code
- Providing law enforcement assistance and support to other law enforcement agencies Providing education, assistance and awareness to the public through community engagement and service programs
Regulation & Oversight
The sheriff is elected every four years and is directly responsible to the electorate.
Divisions
Field Operations
The field division generally serves in a law enforcement and peacekeeping capacity to include civil, criminal and traffic enforcement with a focus on bench, arrest and search warrants; writs, executions, summons, court notices, protection orders and subpoenas.
Field deputies prepare and file incident reports and criminal charges, when necessary. They also conduct personal property executions and serve documents.
Judicial Operations
The judicial division ensures the safety, physical security and orderly conduct of all individuals within and outside of courtrooms and county property.
Deputies in this division assist in transporting and guarding prisoners, ensuring that prisoners are in control at all times. Judicial division deputies also participate in extradites, transports, and moves of prisoners within and beyond the U.S.
Security Operations
The security division ensures the safety, physical security and orderly conduct of individual within county-owned buildings and on county-owned property.
This includes scanning individuals entering county facilities for weapons and contraband, and identifying and reporting all potential safety problems on county property.
