The Franklin County Commissioners recognize the demand for skilled nurses in Franklin County. Each year since 2017, the County has awarded nursing scholarships to deserving area high school graduates. Over the last month, the Commissioners honored six area high school graduates planning to pursue careers in nursing with a $2,500 scholarship.

“The Board of Commissioners wishes all 2020 Franklin County Nursing Scholarship awardees the best of luck as they work toward their goals and meaningful future careers in healthcare,” said Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.

The awardees are:

●      Jessica Alvarado, a 2020 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School and attending Messiah University.

●      Andrea Fox, a 2020 graduate of Chambersburg Area Career Magnet School and attending Penn State Mont Alto.

●      Kristina Jones, a 2020 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School and attending Penn State Mont Alto.

●      Nicole Jones, a 2020 graduate of Waynesboro Area School District and attending Penn State Mont Alto.

●      Bridget Propst, a 2020 graduate of Cumberland Valley Christian School and attending Liberty University.

●      Madison Russell, a 2020 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School and attending Harrisburg Area Community College – Gettysburg campus.

This year’s 17 applications were reviewed by Franklin County Human Resources Director Tiffany Bloyer; Keystone Health’s founder, President, and CEO Joanne Cochran; and Barbara Rossini, past Vice President for Community Relations at Summit Health.

“I continue to be very impressed with the academic qualifications of our local high school seniors as well as with the desire that each student possesses. This makes the selection process extremely difficult. Our applicants were also involved in extracurricular and community-related activities, with a majority of the students committed to volunteering within the field of nursing,” said Ms. Bloyer.

Applicants submitted an essay indicating their short and long term goals pertaining to nursing school, letters of recommendation from each applicant’s high school guidance counselor and two other adults, and a copy of their official transcript. The Franklin County Nursing Scholarship is open to all high school seniors living and attending high school for at least one consecutive year in Franklin County and who have been accepted into an accredited four-year nursing program. Funds are directly applied toward tuition and/or room and board, per student request. The scholarship is non-renewable and a stronger consideration is given to applicants requiring financial assistance.

“The applicants’ passion for wanting to help others through healthcare is commendable. I sincerely hope these enthusiastic students will seek a career path locally to create a positive impact on the lives of the residents of Franklin County,” said Bloyer.

The 2021 Franklin County Nursing Scholarship Applications will be available in January from area high school guidance departments, on the County’s website at www.franklincountypa.gov, or by contacting Franklin County Human Resources at 717-261-3150.
