Franklin County Commissioners Issue Statement On Future Of South Mountain Golf Course

Commissioners

June 21, 2024

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have issued the following statement regarding the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR) plans to terminate its lease of the South Mountain Golf Course:

“The Franklin County Commissioners have heard from many residents and organizations who support preserving the South Mountain Golf Course. We have also heard from a number of individuals and groups who are in favor of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR) decision to repurpose the property to accommodate a visitor and resource center to serve those recreating in Michaux State Forest. Both sides have presented compelling arguments and there is merit to both groups’ positions.

“We respect DCNR’s authority to not renew its lease on the golf course. However, we urge DCNR to listen to feedback from both sides of this issue to reach a solution that will accommodate all parties. The commissioners have sent a letter communicating this position to Governor Shapiro and have encouraged his administration to take the fervent public outcry into consideration before making any additional decisions regarding the future of the South Mountain Golf Course.

“With proper planning and considerations, we are certain DCNR can achieve a compromise that will accommodate both sides of this matter, allowing outdoor recreation enthusiasts of varying interests to continue enjoying and utilizing the natural beauty of Franklin County, Michaux State Forest and the South Mountain region.”
