Franklin County Launches ‘Second Saturdays’ For Local Seniors
Area Agency on Aging
January 22, 2025
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Area Agency on Aging is pleased to announce it is expanding services in southern Franklin County to offer weekend hours at its Greencastle Senior Activity Center once a month.
Beginning Feb. 8, the Greencastle Senior Activity Center will host “Second Saturdays” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. On these days, seniors can hear special presentations from guest speakers, enjoy a catered lunch, participate in health and wellness workshops, and take part in other offered activities. All equipment and other materials that are available during normal hours will also be available on Saturdays. “Second Saturdays” are open to any Franklin County resident aged 60 years or older, not just those who live in Greencastle.
“We know many older adults live by themselves, which means a two-day weekend can feel lonely at times,” said Tawnya Hurley, Franklin County Area Agency on Aging director. “Our centers are known for socialization and we consistently hear from seniors that they wish they had more to do or people to talk to over the weekends. That is where the idea for ‘Second Saturdays’ came from – as a way to provide seniors a place to gather on weekends for some fun and fellowship.”
Greencastle’s “Second Saturdays” will serve as a trial run to see if older adults have an appetite for weekend activities. If it proves to be successful, the Area Agency on Aging could explore the possibility of expanding its schedule to include additional Saturdays or offering the program at other senior centers.
“We know there is a whole population in their early 60s who could come to our centers but they still work Monday-Friday,” said Hurley. “We hope these Saturday hours will allow a new group of seniors to see what a senior center is like so that when they retire from full-time work, they are already acquainted with our senior centers.”
In addition to the Greencastle facility, Franklin County’s Area Agency on Aging also manages senior centers in Chambersburg, Mont Alto, Path Valley (Dry Run), St. Thomas, Tuscarora (Montgomery Township), Upper Strasburg and Waynesboro.
