CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed March to be Red Cross Month in Franklin County. In doing so, the commissioners are celebrating the humanitarian spirit of American Red Cross volunteers in area communities and their commitment to ensuring no one faces a crisis alone.

By declaring March to be Red Cross Month, the commissioners are recognizing the contributions of local Red Cross volunteers. In Franklin County, there are 17 volunteers who support the mission of the Red Cross by helping to provide emergency shelter, food and comfort to families affected by home fires or natural disasters; by donating blood for accident victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients; and by providing support to American service members and veterans, along with their families and caregivers.

Since July, the Red Cross has responded to eight disaster events in Franklin County, supporting 29 individuals in their times of need. In that same timeframe, the organization collected 2,404 units of blood, served 177 people through its Home Fire Campaign, and provided assistance in 106 armed forces cases. In the 11-county Central Pennsylvania Chapter, Red Cross volunteers have logged 16,669 hours of service since July.

“In Franklin County, we take pride in helping our neighbors in their times of need,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “With that same spirit in mind, we encourage all residents to support the humanitarian mission and work of the American Red Cross, whether that’s by volunteering, giving blood, learning life-saving skills or contributing to the organization financially.”
