Franklin County Resolves Longtime Erroneous Sanctuary County Status

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners are pleased to announce that Franklin County has been successfully removed as a sanctuary county on a list maintained by the Center for Immigration Studies (www.cis.org), which incorrectly included Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

The commissioners and county administration worked closely with the Center for Immigration Studies (www.cis.org) to demonstrate that Franklin County policies are not supportive of a sanctuary designation. Those efforts were successful and Franklin County was removed from the online list late last week.

“We are appreciative of CIS’s cooperation in resolving this matter and we are grateful to no longer be listed as a sanctuary county,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “Franklin County has a long history of cooperating with federal immigration authorities and we will continue to cooperate with those authorities to the maximum extent allowed under federal laws.”

Franklin County continues to evaluate evolving case law to ensure that it is doing everything legally possible to work closely with partners in the immigration enforcement agencies. The Franklin County Jail staff regularly works with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to communicate and coordinate custody exchanges for individuals of interest to ICE who are being released from jail.
