Franklin County Preps for Demolition at Downtown Project Site

Pedestrian traffic patterns are changing along North Main Street in downtown Chambersburg. A construction fence will surround the perimeter of the Court Facility Improvement Project’s Main Street/Lincoln Way East site. Installation of the fence will be completed by the end of the week.

The downtown project site includes construction of a new judicial center along with interior renovations to the existing Courthouse Annex and Old Courthouse. The project will result in greater security measures within court buildings and more efficiency for residents needing to conduct court-related business.

Last month, the Board of Commissioners stated that overseeing the Court Facility Improvement Project is their number one budget priority for 2019. The $67.8 million project also includes the construction of an Administration Building and renovations to 340 N. Second Street for Archives office space and storage.

The Court Facility Improvement Project was proposed in January 2018 to address needs for safety and security of those visiting and working in court offices, adequate space to meet the demands of a growing county, and co-locating court offices and services into one courthouse campus for efficiency and convenience.

Demolition of the three buildings located at 14-56 Main Street begins this month in preparation for the construction of the judicial center which is expected to break ground in the spring. The fence will stand along the perimeter of the Main Street/Lincoln Way East construction site for the duration of the Court Facility Improvement Project, anticipated to be complete in 2021.
