Travis Newman is the Employee of the Month for September 2020
The Franklin County Commissioners proudly present September’s Employee of the Month award to Mr. Travis Newman.
Mr. Newman has been employed with Franklin County since January of 2007. He is currently an Adult Probation Officer III. The selection for the September 2020 Employee of the Month was determined by the STAR Committee. There were a total of nineteen nominations which included the following reasons for recommendation:
“Officer Newman was in the process of backing up fellow officers during an arrest at an apartment/hotel establishment on Route 11. Officer Newman was approached by the owners/managers of the facility. Due to a language barrier, Officer Newman did not understand what they were saying, but he recognized that they were concerned. Officer Newman initially thought there may have been a drug overdose. The owners led Officer Newman to one of the rooms. The owner then keyed into the room and opened the door.
As the door opened, thick black smoke began rolling out. Officer Newman then utilized his portable radio to request the fire department. The owners verified that someone was in the room. Officer Newman called out to the individual and received no response. He, along with Officer Brian Smith, then entered the room. Officer Newman searched for the individual through heavy smoke and was able to see that something was on fire.
Officer Newman was able to find a female in the room and instructed her to get out immediately. Once outside, Officer Newman asked her if anyone else was in the room. She stated there was not, but he was not sure if that was true since the female did not respond to initial communication attempts. So, he obtained a fire extinguisher and returned to the room to conduct a secondary search with Officer Smith. He then deployed the fire extinguisher and determined no one else was in the room. They then exited and notified the adjoining apartment of the fire and that they should evacuate.
The quick thinking and actions taken by Officers Newman and Smith played a significant role in saving the female's life, while at the same time putting their own lives at risk.”
“Officer Newman is an experienced officer who always reacts calmly in an emergency. He is eager to assist the public during any type of crisis. Officer Newman can be relied upon to take on additional duties.”
Mr. Newman’s outstanding characteristics are attributes that have not gone unnoticed by his peers. The nomination form describes him as being a great leader, especially in times of stress, having willingness to help in any situation, and dependable.
We are grateful to Mr. Travis Newman as he exudes a high standard of customer service, excellence, and respect to the employees and residents of Franklin County.
