Franklin County Supports Home Rehabilitation Effort

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners expanded their efforts to support safe, affordable housing in local communities by allocating $5,000 in Housing Trust Funds to Chambersburg Project, Inc. The commissioners approved the allocation during the board’s Sept. 7 public meeting.

Founded in 1998, Chambersburg Project, Inc. is a local nonprofit that utilizes teams of youth volunteers from area churches to complete free home improvement projects for qualified Franklin County homeowners who are unable to make the renovations themselves due to financial circumstances or physical limitations.

Chambersburg Project, Inc. gives volunteers an opportunity to give back to the local community by completing service projects such as roof repairs or replacements, building or repairing wheelchair ramps, painting or staining, minor carpentry work, and yard work. Volunteer teams consist of teens and adult leaders, and each team can work on as many as seven different homes during one missions week. During its 2022 missions week in July, Chambersburg Project Inc. assisted 37 homeowners. Teams completed projects in Blue Ridge Summit, Chambersburg, Fayetteville, Mercersburg, Mont Alto, Quincy, Shippensburg and other areas across the county. The organization has assisted on more than 900 work sites in Franklin County since its founding.

“Programs like Chambersburg Project Inc. improve the quality of our residents’ homes and offer worthwhile opportunities for our young people to learn, grow and contribute to our communities in a meaningful way,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.

Franklin County established the Housing Trust Fund in 2002 to support programs and projects that increase the availability of affordable housing to Franklin County residents whose annual income is less than the median income of the county. The fund is generated by fees for filing deeds and mortgages with the Franklin County Recorder of Deeds. Since the Housing Trust Fund’s inception,  Franklin County has allotted more than $2 million to affordable housing projects.
