Franklin County Supports Domestic Violence Awareness Month

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed October 2022 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Franklin County. In doing so, the commissioners are calling upon residents to recognize the critical work that advocates and allies are doing on behalf of domestic violence victims and survivors as well as their efforts to eliminate abuse.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month draws attention to the impact abuse can have on communities. Statistics show that more than 10 million people are abused in the U.S. each year, and 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by a partner. In 2021, 112 individuals in Pennsylvania died from domestic violence incidents, including one in Franklin County. Locally, over 1,500 calls are placed each year to the Women In Need (WIN) emergency helpline.

“Domestic violence doesn’t just impact individual people; it has an effect on children, families and our communities,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller. “All of us at the county stand with organizations and our partners across the state and throughout the U.S. in supporting domestic violence victims and survivors as well as the advocates who serve them.”

By recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Franklin County Commissioners are asking all residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to take a proactive approach to eradicating domestic violence and to support local efforts to raise awareness of the effects domestic violence has on their friends and neighbors.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WIN will host its Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Oct. 14 in Waynesboro. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help WIN provide free services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse in Franklin and Fulton counties. For more information, visit winservices.org.
