The manumission statement grants her freedom when she turns 31. There were no slaves registered to James Cross in the 1780 slave register, states in the manumission that Betty was not registered. No estate papers for James Cross. In the tax records, Cross is taxed for 2 servants in 1780, 3 slaves in 1781, 2 slaves in 1782, 1 slave in 1783, 2 slaves in 1786, 2 slaves in 1788 and 2 slaves in 1789/1790. No record of sale in the Deed books (though this is a less than perfect and but a few sales or transferring of slaves appear in the books). No record of a Betty in the 1790 census. No James Cross listed in Franklin County in 1790.
