The Franklin County Commissioners are pleased to announce a 2018 Franklin County Tourism and Quality of Life Enhancement Grant funding opportunity.
The grant program is designed to enhance the tourism experience, promote visitation and overnight stays within Franklin County, improve the county as a destination for leisure travel, preserve and enhance the historical assets in the county, and provide bike and walking trails for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
Nonprofit organizations and municipalities located within Franklin County whose mission and operations are related to tourism or the improvement of quality of life experiences for county residents are eligible to apply.
“Since we established this grant program, our goal has been to support projects in communities all across the county that preserve our history, create biking and walking trails, and promote tourism. I think we’ve succeeded in making this a countywide program, and we will continue to make this a priority,” said Franklin County Commissioner and Chairman Dave Keller.
The Franklin County Tourism and Quality of Life Enhancement Grant has allocated over $1.5M to more than 30 local projects since its inception in 2014. The funding is derived from the hotel/motel tax on overnight stays at hotels in the county, as well as Marcellus Shale impact fees. The following are examples of projects that have been funded through this grant:
- Coyle Free Library sidewalk, bicycle facilities, and cornice improvements (2017), Borough of Chambersburg - $50,000
- Conococheague Trail Project (2017), Greene Township - $100,000
- Historic Fort Loudon Rehabilitation (2016), Peters Township - $83,500
- Historic Letterkenny Chapel and Veterans & 9/11 Memorial Park walking paths (2016), Letterkenny Township - $6,000
